Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association Honors Dr. Eric Sipos of
Carondelet Neurological Institute with the 2012 Caregiver Award
Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) presented Dr. Eric Sipos, medical director and neurosurgeon at Carondelet Neurological Institute in Tucson yesterday, with the Association’s 2012 HOPE (Honoring Our Professionals for Excellence) Caregiver Award.
Colleagues who nominated Dr. Sipos noted that every day he demonstrates his lifelong commitment to improving the health and safety of both the patients he serves and the healthcare delivery system where he practices.
This commitment led to his vision for the creation of the Carondelet Neurological Institute, the first comprehensive tertiary referral center for the neurosciences in Southern Arizona. From its groundbreaking in 2006, Dr. Sipos played an integral role in the architectural design and program development at the Institute – from the layout of patient rooms and family support areas to the technologies offered in the neuro-critical care unit and surgical suites. He led design efforts to create a unique two-room surgical solution with computed tomography (CT) access that allows neurological patients to have pre-closure CT validation prior to the completion of surgery. This work not only resulted in surgical outcomes exceeding U.S. benchmarks at the Institute, the local design became a national model for the development of similar surgical suites around the United States.
Dr. Sipos’ efforts to improve patient care through his work as the Institute’s Medical Director have helped to build Carondelet Neurological Institute into a regional resource in the diagnosis and treatment of some of the most pervasive neurological problems facing Southern Arizonans.
“Dr. Sipos has a remarkable record of innovative accomplishments and excellence in patient care,” said Laurie Liles, AzHHA’s president and chief executive officer. “He is a gifted physician who well deserves the 2012 HOPE Caregiver Award.”
Dr. Sipos’ goal is to provide the highest quality, patient-centered care. He established the first comprehensive tumor board for Carondelet Health Network. Working in collaboration with neuroradiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, nursing and ancillary providers, Dr. Sipos leads a comprehensive history and social review of each patient to build a team-based, individualized care plan. He also developed a special spine camp and patient navigator program for patients facing spinal surgery. This pre-operative program provides patients with much-needed knowledge about pain and symptom management and prepares them for post-op recovery. The program has resulted in a reduction in length of stay for patients from 2.9 to 2.34 days.
"Dr. Sipos’ commitment to quality healthcare serves as an inspiration to many others across Carondelet and throughout our parent ministry, Ascension Health,” said Jim Beckmann, President and CEO of Carondelet Health Network. “We are thrilled to see him honored with the HOPE award. It is well deserved."
Dr. Sipos is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is a member of the Congress of Neurosurgeons and the Arizona Neurological Society.
