University of Arizona basketball star turned music industry producer/executive, Harvey Mason, Jr., captivated a room of 650 business leaders and community members Tuesday night with the story of his professional successes and his family’s personal health challenges. Those challenges, Mason said, have led him to have both great respect for and an interest in publicly supporting the efforts of healthcare providers such as Carondelet Health Network. Mason was the keynote speaker at the Carondelet Foundation Annual Dinner.
Mason regaled the audience with humorous and thoughtful tales about his time under the tutelage of former UA Coach Lute Olson, where he says he “learned how to do things the right way” with dignity, honor and pride. Mason attributes Coach Olson and fellow UA basketball great, Steve Kerr, with helping him build a work ethic that has led to his tremendous success in the music industry. The six-time Grammy award winner and President of Harvey Mason Media has written and produced the music for many of today’s top artists including Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Elton John, Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Hudson.
Mason said he was living a blessed life and that “nothing bad ever happened to my family” until the day he discovered his 12-year-old daughter had a cancerous tumor in her brain. During the time she was undergoing surgery and radiation treatments in a Los Angeles hospital, Mason recognized the incredible efforts put forth by doctors, nurses and hospitals when families are in need. It gave him newfound respect for the work of healthcare systems like Carondelet. “Carondelet has always been present in this community,” said Mason. “Drawing attention to the quality of care Carondelet provides is a reason I wanted to come and speak tonight.”
UA Men’s Basketball Coach Sean Miller, a long-time Carondelet supporter, also spoke to the sell-out crowd at Ventana Canyon Resort’s Kiva Ballroom. Miller said, “Basketball and Carondelet have more in common than you might think. They are both about perseverance, faith and performing well under pressure. We each focus on a team of people working together toward a common goal. The Carondelet team is built to last.”
The sold-out event was an opportunity for Carondelet to honor and thank members of the community who so generously support the efforts of the area’s largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare ministry, serving Tucson and Southern Arizona for more than 132 years.
Title sponsors of the event were Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman P.C. and The Centurions. The reception sponsor was Mercy Care Plan. Other major sponsors included Swaim Associates Ltd., Tucson Electric Power, Crowe Horwath, Hunter Partners, Kaufman, Hall & Associates, and Touchpoint Support Services and. Proceeds from the evening will be directed to the Carondelet Foundation Fund for Excellence. The fund is used to support physicians and healthcare professionals, purchase medical equipment, fund facility renovations and bring excellence to the patient experience.
