Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery

Dr. Emun Abdu is a neurosurgeon at Carondelet Neurological Institute who specializes in cerebrovascular and endovascular surgery. Dr. Abdu comes to Tucson from the Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle, where she completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular/endovascular surgery.

Dr. Abdu is one of a small number of physicians nationwide who are trained in both traditional surgical methods and minimally-invasive endovascu¬lar treatments for cerebrovascular disease. As the first physician in Tucson with this uncommon subspecialty, Dr. Abdu is a unique and valuable addition to the physician team at Carondelet Neurological Institute.

 


Vascular and General Neurology

Dr. Rod Anderson is a board certified vascular neurologist at Carondelet Neurological Institute. Dr. Anderson practices general neurology and frequently lectures on stroke prevention, diagnosis and treatment. He has conducted and participated in numerous clinical research trials, studying the treatment and prevention of stroke. Dr. Anderson received his medical degree at the University of Arizona, and completed residencies in neurology and general surgery and a Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Fellowship at the UA.

An expert in vascular neurology, Dr. Anderson also has an interest in the diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis.

 


Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery

Dr. David Arzouman is a Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute physician specializing in cardiothoracic surgery. He is an expert in valve repair and replacement and off-pump beating heart surgery, and serves patients at both St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Hospitals.

Dr. Arzouman received his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School and was most recently an attending physician in the cardiovascular and thoracic program at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota.

 


Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery

Dr. Derek von Haag is director of cardiothoracic surgery at Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute, where he specializes in minimally invasive heart surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of California in Irvine and was the Chief Resident of General Surgery at University of California Davis Medical Center. Dr. von Haag completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. von Haag is a frequent public speaker on the latest techniques in cardiothoracic surgery. Prior to joining Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute, Dr. von Haag was in private practice in Phoenix.

 


Cardiovascular Disease

Dr. M. Reza Habibzadeh is a cardiologist at Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute. A graduate of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Habibzadeh completed his internship and residency in internal medicine and a cardiology research fellowship at the University of Arizona. He also completed a fellowship in echocardiography at the University of California San Francisco and a fellowship in general and interventional cardiology at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Habibzadeh’s professional interests include coronary interventions, structural heart disease including atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale, perivalvular leak closures and valvuloplasty.

 


Anesthesiology

Dr. Michael Hecht is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute. Before being appointed Chief Medical Officer at Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute, he served as chief of anesthesia and medical director at Tucson Heart Hospital. Dr. Hecht has also retained clinical duties as a practicing cardiac anesthesiologist with Southern Arizona Anesthesia Services. He was the first physician in Tucson to become board certified in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Arizona Medical Association and the American College of Physician Executives.

Dr. Hecht earned his medical degree at SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York, and completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

 


Vascular Surgery

Dr. Scott Berman is chief of cardiovascular surgery at Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute. He specializes in vascular surgery and was one of the first vascular specialists in Tucson to offer patients minimally invasive treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms, thoracic aneurysms, carotid disease, lower extremity PAD and venous disease. Dr. Berman established the first endovascular aneurysm program at St. Mary’s Hospital in 1999.

Dr. Berman received his medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and completed his residency in general surgery at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine. During his residency, he completed a fellowship in surgical research and clinical nutrition at the Hampton Roads VA Medical Center. Following residency in general surgery, he completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Arizona.

 


Cardiovascular Disease

Dr. Joseph Chambers specializes in cardiovascular disease; his work includes consultative, invasive and interventional cardiology services, as well as diagnostic and interventional peripheral vascular services. He is board certified in adult internal medicine, adult cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology.

Dr. Chambers obtained his medical degree from Southern Illinois University, before completing a residency in adult internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Chambers also completed an adult cardiology fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute. His professional activities include more than eight years of Interventional Cardiology and Peripheral Vascular services throughout the State of Kansas, with academic appointments at the University of Kansas Department of Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine, and Wichita State University. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Chambers co-hosted a weekly radio and television program on cardiovascular health.

Dr. Chambers joined Southwest Heart in 2005 and Carondelet Specialist Group in 2011.

Dr. Amy Beiter is President and Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Beiter is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics, a fellow of American College of Physicians. a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and a member of the American College of Physician Executives.

Under Dr. Beiter’s leadership, St. Mary’s Hospital has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence and a Distinguished Hospital for Critical Care by Healthgrades®. St. Mary’s, a Joint-Commission certified Primary Stroke Center, is also honored as one of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Gold Plus and Target Honor Roll Hospitals for Stroke Care. St. Mary’s is home to the Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute and The Breast Center. As a physician CEO, Beiter joins a select group: Of the roughly 6,500 U.S. hospitals in 2010, only 235 had a physician at the helm.

 


President, CEO
St. Joseph’s Hospital

Tony Fonze is President and Chief Executive Officer at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was formerly Carondelet Health Network’s Chief Information Officer and a Vice President of Ascension Health Information Systems. Tony has enjoyed a successful career in a variety of major leadership positions including healthcare operations, information systems, research and development and as an entrepreneur. Tony has been integral in the planning and implementation of many key strategic initiatives for Carondelet Health Network. He is a founder, trustee and Vice Chair of Arizona’s health information exchange, the Health Information Network of Arizona, and has worked extensively toward the improvement of patient experience in our hospitals and across our Ministry.

 


Senior VP, CMO
St. Joseph’s Hospital

Dr. Donald Denmark is Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Carondelet Health Network. As CMO, Dr. Denmark manages medical staff affairs, health information and quality improvement, and provides oversight of case management and pharmacy.

A native of Canada, Dr. Denmark received his medical degree from the University of Alberta and completed a residency in family practice at the University of Western Ontario. He was in private practice for 17 years, and then began a 13-year tenure with Integris Health in Oklahoma, followed by a position with NorthBay Healthcare Group where he was vice president of medical affairs.

Dr. Denmark joined Carondelet Health Network in 2011.

 


Breast Surgery

Dr. Gerlinde Tynan is a board certified general surgeon specializing in surgical disease of the breast. She is an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and is involved in both their educational and quality improvement programs.

Dr. Tynan is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed her surgical residency at the University of Arizona.

She participates in clinical research in association with Arizona Oncology. She is medical director of The Breast Center and the Breast Health Program at Carondelet St. Mary's. Her practice is mostly comprised of patients with breast cancer, although she also treats benign breast disease and provides assessment and counseling for those at high risk of breast cancer.

 


Orthopedic Surgery, Joint Replacement

Dr. Edward Berghausen is a board certified orthopedic surgeon at The Joint Replacement Center at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital. He specializes in joint replacement surgery, including revision joint replacement surgery and small incision joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, elbow, knee and hip. He has performed over 3,000 joint replacements during his career.

Dr. Berghausen trained in general surgery at the Harvard Surgical Service before completing orthopedic specialty training at Tufts New England Medical Center. Following his training at Tufts, Dr. Berghausen completed a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at the combined Harvard Surgical Service Program at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Berghausen’s professional practice is aimed at the management of complex injuries involving the shoulder, hip and knee, for which he is an expert in arthroscopic surgery. He performs small incision surgery, as well as computer-assisted surgery.
