Hero Patient Honored In Holy Cross Emergency Department - Monday, 08 February, 2010
Thursday, January 14 was an unusual day in the emergency department at Holy Cross Hospital. After all, it’s not every day that an honest-to-goodness hero walks through the doors.

As Emergency Department supervisor Susie Sunday describes it, a young man presented in the ED with pulmonary issues. As the charge nurse was assessing his needs, she was astonished to hear his story. He had been walking by a house and noticed a lady running out with a young child in her arms. Her kitchen was on fire; inside, two other children were still trapped. With no thought for his own safety, Jose Antonio Barcelo ran inside, using his jacket to beat down the fire. He brought the children out of the house safely.

Imagine how taken aback the emergency department associates were as the story spread. Soon afterward, associates gathered with a cake and balloons to honor Barcelo’s heroic performance. Even the Nogales International newspaper came by to take pictures and tell his story.

“I can’t tell you how much my heart swelled with pride as I watched my staff coordinate this effort,” says Susie.

In the newspaper article, Holy Cross associate Shirley Ortega, RN, said of the celebratory cake that associates shared with Barcelo: “We didn’t put a real candle there. We thought he’d had enough fire for one day.”
