Carondelet Neurological Institute Brain Academy 2013

If you are you a high school junior interested in medicine or health sciences?  Are you fascinated by the mysteries of the mind, join your peers in the 3rd Annual Carondelet Neurological Institute Brain Academy. This is a tremendous opportunity to meet with experts in the field to have your questions answered with other students who share your interests!  We are now accepting applications for the next Brain Academy that will take place May 17-18, 2013.    For more information on eligibility criteria and how to apply see here:

In 2011, high School Juniors representing twelve TUSD schools participated in the first Brain Academy.  They met with doctors, nurses, and technicians to learn about neurological disease, current treatments, and careers in medicine.  Students were given a tour of the Carondelet Neurological Institute Facilities including the SRS Linear Accelerator, Angiography suite, and Operating Rooms.  Participants attended talks at the Continued Medical Education Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Concussion in Sports, and Stroke to learn about these common neurological conditions and their treatment.  Hands-on activities included taking EEG recordings, using stereotactic surgery biotechnology, and a demonstration of proproiception, muscle stretch and reflexes.  A Neuroscience graduate student from the University of Arizona spoke about current brain research as well as answered questions about post-high school education.  After the Brain Academy, participants were invited to shadow one of the doctors to learn more about day-to-day clinical practice. 





Drs, Rod Anderson, JC Christiano, Robert Goldfarb, William Lujan, Eric Sipos, and Cynthia Reed from Western Neurosurgery, LTD and the Carondelet Neurological Institute participated in the Brain Academy and answered student’s questions during the educational conference.
