Angela's Story

Angela Basurto and her daughter, Jocelyn

Prenatal Care and Education for Mothers in Need

Moms-to-be in Tucson can take an important “First Step” in caring for the health of their babies at Primeros Pasos, two prenatal and post natal clinics operated by Carondelet Health Network in Tucson. Angela Basurto was one of the very first patients at the Primeros Pasos West Side location when Carondelet opened the doors in early 2006. She had excellent prenatal care and was delighted to deliver a healthy baby girl in June 2007.

Angela is not your typical Primeros Pasos patient.

As a Tucson Unified School District middle school librarian, she has a good job with health insurance benefits. Even so, healthcare costs were considerable and Primeros Pasos was a smart and necessary choice for Angela’s care during pregnancy and delivery.

“I had a very good experience,” Angela says. “My doctor was so informative and very patient with me. I got a lot of individual attention at every appointment.”

In addition, Angela enjoyed the availability of numerous educational classes. “The classes were so helpful, particularly for a first-time mom like me,” she explains.

The end of Angela’s pregnancy was a bit frightening including a medical condition requiring a month-long bed rest and a premature delivery. The complications resulted in baby Jocelyn being born a month early and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for two weeks.

However, the delivery at St. Joseph’s Hospital went well, and the hospital staff took very good care of Angela and her baby.

“They were just amazing,” Angela says. “They offered such wonderful support with great resources and follow-up care.”

Now, Jocelyn is healthy, and “you’d never know she had been a preemie,” says Angela, who highly recommends Primeros Pasos to others.

Thanks to Carondelet’s Primeros Pasos clinics, expectant mothers in Tucson, including those who lack insurance or face economic difficulties, can get important prenatal care and education. Primeros Pasos, Spanish for “first steps,” has two clinics that provide comprehensive obstetrical health care services, free pregnancy testing and prenatal education classes.
