Choosing Your Obstetrician

During your pregnancy, one of the most important decisions you will make is to choose your baby's first doctor.

Your obstetrician will provide your pregnancy and birthing care but will not care for your new baby. You will need to choose a pediatrician or a family practice physician to provide care for your new baby when your baby arrives.
The pediatrician or family practice physician will need to see your baby daily while in the hospital or make arrangements for another physician to care for your baby during that time. It is important that you either talk on the phone or meet with your baby's doctor you have chosen before you give birth.

You need to know your baby's doctor when you arrive at the hospital. You also need to know if this physician comes to St. Joseph's Hospital.

Where To Begin

  • Obtain from your insurance company a list of affiliated physicians who will provide your care (obstetrical care) and the care of your new baby (pediatrician or family practice) and have privileges to practice at the hospital you will be using.
  • Ask family and friends for the names of physicians they would recommend. Consider the location and proximity to your home.

What To Consider

  • Does the doctor's philosophy of care fit with your own?
  • How comfortable do you feel with this doctor and do you feel free to ask him or her any questions?
  • What are the doctor's office hours and how are emergencies handled? How are after-hours care and weekend care managed?
  • How are financial arrangements handled?
    Many physicians who care for babies offer parents-to-be one free prenatal visit to get acquainted.
