Carondelet Health Network’s Odette Bolano to Chair 2011 Start! Heart Walk

TUCSON, Ariz. – (November 17, 2010) – Odette Bolano, Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute and Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, is issuing a challenge to all area business leaders – jump start your employees’ personal wellness efforts for their sake and the sake of a healthier Tucson.

“Sixty percent of the nation’s Business Roundtable CEOs cite healthcare as their number one cost pressure,” notes Bolano, who will chair the 2011 American Heart Association’s Start! Heart Walk in Tucson on April 30, 2011. “Productivity losses from health problems cost American employers 226 billion dollars annually and yet physical inactivity and obesity are on the rise. What are we doing as employers to increase our employees’ commitment to living a healthier and more physically fit lifestyle? The answer is -- not enough.”

A great first step, encourages Bolano, is to interest employees in becoming active participants in this spring’s Start! Heart Walk. “Now is the time to launch a campaign amongst your employees, challenging and encouraging them to build teams and participate,” according to Bolano. “This is an opportunity to improve both the fiscal health of your company and the physical health of your employees.”

Jeff Christensen, CEO of Health South Rehabilitation Institute of Tucson and a member of the American Heart Association Board of Directors, agrees. “Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States,” states Christensen. “We need major corporate leaders and small business owners alike to make a commitment to help make our community healthier, one business at a time.”

The 2011 Start! Heart Walk takes place on Saturday, April 30 at Tucson’s Reid Park. Participants form teams and are encouraged to walk the 3 mile course in support of the American Heart Association and its never-ending battle to inform, educate, and prevent heart disease in the U.S. The dollars raised fund research, public education efforts, public awareness campaigns, and CPR training for thousands each year.
