Perinatal Assessment Center offers services for high-risk pregnancies

Sep 25, 2018

St. Joseph’s Hospital committed to Maternal Fetal Medicine program for Southern Arizona

TUCSON (Sept. 25, 2018) – The Perinatal Assessment Center at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital offers an array of treatments, procedures and services including fetal diagnosis, genetic counseling and management of high-risk pregnancies. Carondelet Health Network recently named Thomas Strong, MD as medical director of the center.

Patients of the Maternal Fetal Medicine program at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital can receive preconception care and specialized prenatal care for high-risk pregnancies including medical or obstetrical complications, maternal complications, fetal anomalies, fetal complications and fetal testing, as well as labor and delivery services.

“A thriving Maternal Fetal Medicine program at St. Joseph’s Hospital affirms our commitment to high levels of specialized care for Southern Arizona families and we are pleased that a physician of Dr. Strong’s caliber has joined our medical staff,” said Carondelet CEO Mark Benz. “Working in collaboration with community obstetricians and other providers, we believe our team approach to high-risk pregnancy care truly differentiates our program.”

Women delaying childbirth until advanced age or those with obesity, diabetes, heart disease contribute to the potential for high-risk pregnancies. The ability to identify and manage the care of high-risk mothers with high-risk infants adds to the hospital’s capability to care for families in the community, said Benz.

Maternal fetal medicine specialists have advanced knowledge of the medical, surgical, obstetrical, fetal and genetic complications of pregnancy and their effects on both the mother and the fetus, according to Teresa Anzar, RNC-ob, MSN, director of Women’s and Infants Services at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Maternal fetal medicine physicians are collaborative partners to OB/GYN physicians and Certified Nurse Midwife providers in providing consultations, co-management or transfer of care for complicated maternal patients before, during, and after a high-risk pregnancy, explained Anzar.

“The ability to identify and manage the care of high-risk mothers with high-risk infants where they are cared for together enhances the comprehensive Women’s and Infants Services provided at St. Joseph’s Hospital,” she added.

“I’m looking forward to working with the Carondelet medical staff and the obstetrics care team for patients with complicated pregnancies,” said Dr. Strong. “Carondelet Health Network has a long history of being a premier healthcare provider for the region. I’m very encouraged to see the long-term commitment to supporting excellent care for families in our community.”
