Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital receives recertification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center from DNV

Jan 10, 2023

TUCSON (January 10, 2023) – Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital has once again been nationally designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by DNV, for offering the most advanced stroke treatment available.

CCSC-300px“With stroke care, you must have the clinicians and resources to provide services, but also the ability to act with extreme efficiency because of the time-critical nature of these events,” says Dr. L. Roderick Anderson, Carondelet Health Network’s Stroke Medical Director.  “We are incredibly proud of our team for their dedication to ensure our community has access to advanced stroke care. This national certification validates all the effort we have put into this program and to ensuring the health and safety of our patients.”

The DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

“Achieving this level of certification demonstrates our team’s commitment to achieving excellence and providing quality care to our patients,” says Monica Vargas-Mahar, market chief executive officer for Carondelet Health Network. “We are incredibly proud of our team for this achievement. Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital remains committed to providing the highest level of stroke care for Tucson and Southern Arizona.”

Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital has been committed to investing and expanding stroke care offered to southern Arizona residents.  In July 2021, Carondelet Health Network expanded its neuroscience and stroke care capabilities by unveiling a new $3 million dollar state-of-the-art interventional radiology (IR) lab.  Equipped with the very latest Biplane two- and three-dimensional brain imaging technology, physicians are able to perform minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide range of clinical problems, including interventional and emergency angioplasty, remove blood clots, device implants and other procedures.  The Biplane technology allows clinicians to visualize vessels at multiple time points with advanced imaging capabilities.

Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital is also nationally recognized for stroke care.  As a designated Primary Plus Stroke Center, St. Mary’s Hospital is equipped to go above and beyond the requirements of a primary stroke center, with the addition of training, equipment, experience, and personnel for performing thrombectomies and post-care for the treatment of acute ischemic strokes.  These collective achievements highlight Carondelet Health Network’s commitment and success in ensuring their stroke patients receive treatment that meets research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.
