Critical access hospital is committed to high quality care and patient safety

NOGALES (Feb. 22, 2019) – Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital led all other Tenet hospitals in the latest national patient safety survey by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital exteriorThe ARHQ Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture is conducted annually to gauge hospital employees’ and physicians’ perceptions of patient safety in individual hospitals, and to share their views on their managers’ and hospital leadership’s commitment to patient safety.

Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital scored in the 91st percentile for the 2018 survey results, compared with an overall average hospital benchmark of 78th percentile, according to Patricia Hess MBA, RN, Holy Cross director of Clinical Quality Improvement.

According to AHRQ, areas of strength for most surveyed hospitals included teamwork within hospital departments, management support for a culture of patient safety, and continuous organizational learning opportunities.

“These outstanding results are a direct reflection of Holy Cross Hospital’s focus on sustaining a culture of safety,” said CEO Debra Knapheide. “The survey data is also very useful for providing feedback for individual department leaders to use for identifying process improvement opportunities and support of our patient safety culture.”

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is a U.S. government agency that functions as a part of the Department of Health & Human Services to support research to help improve the quality of healthcare.

The 2018 survey database consists of data from 382,834 respondents across 630 hospitals including teaching, nonprofit and for-profit hospitals. Most respondents indicated they had direct interaction with patients, and more than half have worked in their hospital for six years or more, according to AHRQ.

“As a recognized critical access hospital, the staff at Holy Cross is committed to high quality care and patient safety. Ranking among the top hospitals nationally demonstrates the hospital’s leadership is focused on collaborative efforts to deliver safe, high quality, affordable healthcare to residents of Santa Cruz County,” said Mark Valenzuela, chair of the hospital’s board of trustees.

Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital is a 25-bed hospital in Nogales, Arizona, providing emergency care, general surgery, labor and delivery services and important health and wellness education for residents throughout Santa Cruz County.
