TUCSON (June 24, 2019) – The results are in and Carondelet Health Network’s annual Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive collected more than 92,000  servings of breakfast foods to benefit Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

“We are grateful for the many community members and businesses that stepped up to donate healthy cereal in the drop off boxes at our hospitals,” said Rebecca Engel, a team captain on the Carondelet Wellness Committee.

More than 150,000 individuals in Pima County experience food insecurity, and with a nearly 25% poverty rate in Santa Cruz County, hunger in rural areas presents a unique challenge, according to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Whole-grain cereal, when part of a healthy, balanced breakfast including dairy, fruit and lean protein, is a popular food item that experts say can easily address the hunger gap during the summer months when children are not in school.

“Summer is a particularly difficult time because many children in need can no longer rely on their school meals for a nutritious breakfast, so their families often turn to food banks for help,” added Carondelet Wellness Committee member Brenda Bourg.

“Thanks to the many generous donations to the Carondelet Health Network cereal drive, many families will have a healthy, whole-grain cereal breakfast every summer morning.”

The Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive is supported by Carondelet Health Network’s parent organization Tenet Healthcare, which last year collected some five million servings of cereal and donated $380,000 through the efforts of its facilities across the U.S.

“Hunger doesn’t take a vacation during summer months when children are home from school. Our annual cereal drive recognizes the importance of beginning each day with a nutritious breakfast,” added Engel.
