Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive hosted by Carondelet hospitals

May 11, 2018

Healthy cereal donations accepted through June 8 at all Carondelet Health Network hospitals

TUCSON (May 11, 2018) – Because hunger doesn’t take a vacation, Carondelet St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s and Holy Cross hospitals are again leading a community effort to provide area children and adults struggling with hunger with a healthy breakfast this summer.

The Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive runs through Friday, June 8, benefitting the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, a member of the Feeding America network.

“At Carondelet Health Network we understand the health issues children face from hunger and poor nutrition,” said Mark Benz, chief executive officer. “We recognize the importance of beginning each day with a nutritious breakfast and, through this drive, we hope to help the many in our community struggling with food insecurity. We invite you to help kids be Healthy Over Hungry this summer.”

  • 3 out of 5 southern Arizona children qualify for free or reduced-cost school breakfast during the school year
  • 200,000 individuals may not know where their next meal will come from in southern Arizona
  • 1 in 4 children and 1 in 5 adults are at risk of hunger across the state of Arizona

Whole-grain cereal, when part of a healthy, balanced breakfast including dairy, fruit, and lean protein, is a popular food item that experts say can easily address the hunger gap during the summer months when children are not in school. The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona serves food across five counties in southern Arizona.

“We appreciate the Carondelet Health Network for hosting the Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive and are grateful for its commitment to building a healthy community,” said Michael McDonald, CEO of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. “Summer is a particularly difficult time because many children in need can no longer rely on their school meals for a nutritious breakfast, so their families often turn to us for help. Thanks to Carondelet and the Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive, many families will have a healthy, whole-grain cereal breakfast every morning this summer.”

Community members may donate healthy cereal to the Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive through June 8 at the following locations:

  • Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital, 1601 W. St. Mary's Rd., Tucson
  • Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, 350 N. Wilmot Rd., Tucson
  • Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital, 1171 W. Target Range Rd, Nogales
